What is it with Bono, and Gedolf crusade in saving Africa?

I like Bono, dont get me wrong, but what on earth are they trying to do...Gedolf got involved while his own family is in a mess...cant understand why???Is it their hobby, why dont they look to help their own first. I do not understand this crusade one bit....Alf inspired me to ask this question as he mentioned these two in one of his answers.

When famous people's careers are flagging, they always turn to some cause to put themselves back in the spotlight. Africa is the easiest place to do it. They don't have to spend a lot of money to get a lot of attention. To those who would say, that these people help Africa, I would ask. What really changed since these people started their causes in Africa? I once read an article about this issue in some foreign newspaper. It basically said that these people use Africa as a crutch to promote books about themselves or business dealings with governmental organizations.

Sprinkly, there are hundreds of professional people like doctors, nurses and engineers that dedicate their lives to helping the disadvantaged. They live amongst these people year in and year out to make a difference. Why should people like Bono be made a knight and be named for a Nobel prize when he just go on tv and talk and talk and do not do the actual walk. All those people that do their bit everyday on the ground in Africa should rather be knighted and held up as the heroes they are. Not an artist that sits in his luxurios home and give ideas how the world should be run. They are just a bunch of potheads who can't maintain a stable family life in their own homes anyway. What do they know of suffering, apart from getting people like you to buy their products and music? They also go on about global warming, but I don't see them giving up their private jets, cars and electric appliances and live in modest houses like they advocate people should do.You are fooled too easily by big starry names.

Just aging rock stars who will exploit any situation to keep in the lime light.
While geldorf was in africa sorting out our problems for us, the blacks were humping his wife here.
The only people to really benefit from these (sic) crusades are Geldorf and Bo ner.

They want to help people, why do people mistrust people who want to help? Why does there have to be an ulterior motive? If they were normal people doing the same work would they get the same criticism? Should everyone just look after their own and let the rest of the world go to hell?

Bono has been interested in humanitarian work since 1979 it is not some phase or hobby he truly wants to make a difference. He has even been nominated for a Nobel peace prize three times for his work, people take him seriously. He was made a knight last year.

And I really don't think anyone can say that he does it to draw attention to his music they are successful enough as it is.

U2 rocks!

Geldof and Bono both credit Amnesty International's benefit show in 1979 "The Secret Policeman's Ball " as their inspiration to get involved in humanitarian work.

"The show and its spin-off film and record albums were very influential in galvanizing the participation of entertainers in political and social causes in subsequent decades. Musicians-turned-activists such as Sting, Peter Gabriel, Bob Geldof and Bono have attributed their participation in human rights issues to their exposure to Amnesty via "The Secret Policeman's Ball" show.
