"As of 1 July 2005, U.S. and Canadian citizens must present proof of citizenship in the form of a valid passport. "

St. Barts is technically French territory, therefore under the Visa Waiver Program, American Citizens only require a valid passport and may remain on St. Barts for 90 days only. After 90 days they must apply for an extension or residency. Report It

Yes, you need a passport to anywhere outside the USA. Travel to St. Croix, St. John, St. Thomas don't require a passport because they are US territories. Anywhere else in the Caribbean you need a passport.
