Please read on in the below link if you want to catch a glimpse of the philosophy behind it :

If you mean Dust Devils, yes I've only seen small one's. I have watched larger ones on Youtube and there is no denying them.

Only on tv.

The whirling of the dervishes is like some sort of meditation. They try to achieve unity with god.

So, I find the "whirling shows" and modern dance pieces that use the whirling dervish theme a little strange. I mean, those dervishes don't whirl to show off! Do Buddhists make meditation and nirvana-reaching shows in public?

On the other hand, I can understand that foreigners find this exotic and the shows are to reveal how the ceremonies are done. But ultimately, I think the shows are fake, not the real thing.

I saw them dancing at an outdoor popular festival In Konya, which is where they come from. It was a local event, followed by a rousing speech from the mayor and an insane firework display. The dervishes themselves were great - lovely, mysterious and repetitive music (lots of flute soloing), and all that hypnotic whirling, round and round for about 15-20 minutes. In Konya you find out all about them - it's the centre of an interesting, mystical branch of Islam associated with the dervishes.

No I haven't. I would like to go and watch them in Konya though.

Mamma Li Turchi wrote exactly what I was about to answer.

yes, it was interesting. They also explained about Mevlana.

I haven't but my mum has, and she can not stop talking about them that I will hopefully go and see them soon...

I think they are amazing..just like Mevlana, cos if you read his thoughts etc. it give you a totally different world, a world that is just very beautiful..

Yes I have. I went to see them in Bristol with my husband. they are amazing. I have a small model of one whirling around on my shelf now. It was a shame we couldn't video it.

If you are visiting Turkey like the rest have said you can see them in Konya..but as well preformances are also held in Istanbul and Cappadocia..

Yes, both in Konya and Istanbul. The Mevlana have developed a fine and peaceful form of worship and meditation. The "dance" is a joy to watch and the accompanying music is heart-stilling. You can get CD's of the music to help you relax at night.

Have seen them in Turkey and in Egypt. They were great. I have also seen the Sufi ceremony. That was boring and long.
