Best Restaurant in Vienna, Austria?

Best Restaurant in Vienna, Austria?

Yes, it's still there. The adress is "Schottentor", by the way, and the bank has been renamed "Bank Austria" after a merger, but the stand is still there. Quality is still very good in my opinion.

Other than that, one would have to define "best" restaurant. If you are looking for Haute Cuisine, check out the "Steirereck", the "Coburg" in the Palais Coburg, or the Korso. Or of course the "Sacher", home of the famous cake of this name.

If you are looking for good, solid Viennese cooking, the "Plachutta" might do it for you.

You can't go wrong with any of these.

Well, its not a restaurant, but . . .

Many years ago I read in a guidebook that the best "wurst" in central Europe could be had at the wurst stand at the entrance of the Kreditanstalt (central bank) in downtown Vienna. One day, while ambling around downtown on a stopover I found myself across the street from an imposing columned building with the word: "Kreditanstalt" across the pediment. Suddenly my mind recalled the guidebook's words. I looked around the entrance & there, nestled alongside the enormous front entrance steps was a tiny little wurst stand. Couldn't resist that kind of suggestion of fate. So I bought a sausage. And it was . . . absolutely wonderful! Crisp on the outside; wonderfully juicy & garlicky in the center. Possibly the best I've ever had.

That was some 20 years ago & I don't know if it's still there, or who is running it if it is. But if you happen to be around the Kreditanstalt in mid-day & see a little wurst stand by the front entrance, well . . . . remember that not all great food is served on tables by waiters.
