In your opinion are there any unsafe or high crime areas of DC to avoid for tourists unfamiliar..thank you!?

Staying in Falls Church, but will be entering DC what metro lines to avoid and areas are crime ridden . I know crime is everywhere but is more prevalent in some area then others. thanks

There are no places that tourists are likely to go that are high crime areas. You will be fine on metro.

The reputation DC has as a high-crime city mostly dates to the late 80s, and is no longer really true. Crime in DC tends either to be in distant bad neighborhoods nowhere near the tourist center, or is the usual petty theft against tourists which ANY urban area has (New York, London, Rome, Paris, Munich, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Tortonto, etc.). Keep yourself alert for the latter, tourists are targeted because they are less likely to report crimes and to prosecute them anywhere in the world.

But you will be very safe riding on metro (metro is one of the safest subway systems in the world - and high security now!) and visiting any of the sights.

no

Absolutely, yes. DC is divided into 4 quadrants, and I would avoid anything outside of Northwest, which is by far the safest. The other areas are OK only within a couple of blocks of Capitol Hill. Metrorail itself is fairly safe, but it does go to stations in all areas. Almost all the touristy things are in safe areas.

I hope you enjoy your visit!

As others have said, you will be decently safe on metro. I would stay away from the Southeast section of DC. While the city is trying to revitalize that area including a new baseball stadium, i would be more cautious in that area. I don't know why a tourist would go there though!

The most dangerous part of DC is the southeast portion, I would avoid areas like Lincoln Park and Eastern Market. Thankfully, not much worth visiting is in these areas. The DC transit system, (called the Metro to locals) is a little pricey, but clean and safe, so use it freely, because parking is a major pain and can be really expensive. All the touristy places, as well as the center of the city which is mostly government office buildings are all fairly safe. You can see plenty of things sticking in those areas, but for safe AND fun places to go try Dupont Circle, Chinatown (which is a great bar/food area and not seedy at all), and Georgetown. Excepting Georgetown, all are accessible by Metro. Go to http://www.wmata.com/ for details on public transit.

Carlos is correct. Northeast and southeast. The tourist areas are pretty safe just be aware of your surroundings. Don't get off at unknown metro stops and wander around. I don't know what the other poster is talking about DC is dangerous. I live just outside DC there is a shooting every week on the news. But again the tourist areas are safe just use common sense.

around the national theater dont go farther then that because they will have some strange people or drive
