Are all the Dinosaurs REAL at the Smithsonain Museum in DC ..they didnt look like it!?

They looked like fake, ...I thought it was suppost to be real dinosaurs. Or are they? Thanks!

In many museums they are casts made from the real thing at the University of Utah, however, many are the real deal. You would have to read the description or ask an employee.

But either way, the dinosaurs were the real thing.

well, from waht i know they would clean it up a little bit ( you know, chemical baths and other) so it looks fake but its not

No, they are just castings

The dinosaur skeletons are partially real bones (or casts made from the real bones), and partially modern recreations of bones. They are mounted on frames built by the museum to hold the bones upright.

It is rare for a paleontologist to uncover all the bones from the remains of a dinosaur. They take the bones they can find, and fill in around those bones with modern recreations. They then try to determine how the animal would have appeared when it was living, and build a frame to hold the bones in that position.

Define "real..." Most of the bones in the skeletons are castings. It depends from dinosaur to dinosaur and bone to bone. The Triceratops that the museum has is the most "real"- about 30-40% of the skeleton is actual bone. The large plant eater in the main display is the least real. I believe that it's 100% castings. However, those castings are made from the actual bones of several skeletons. While you're not looking at actual fossilized bone, you are looking at what those bones look like exactly...

There are several reasons for this- one is that there are more museums that want dinosaurs than there are complete skeletons. Another is that the actual bones are often being studied by paleontologists, and so are in labs rather than on display. The last reason is practical- a real fossilized bone may weigh several hundered pounds (it is rock, after all). On the other hand, a plaster or fiberglass cast of that bone may only weigh 20 or 30 pounds. That makes it much easier to mount, and much less prone to breakage.
